Review: Masooda – Lengthy yet partly engaging

Masooda is one of the true blue horror thrillers from Telugu cinema. It has been a while since Tollywood saw a proper horror drama and this film falls right in that category. But can it keep us invested?

Story: Sangeetha, a hardworking mother discovers that her daughter is possessed by a ghost named Masooda. She then takes the help of her neighbor Tiruveer to tackle the situation. Who is this ghost Masooda and what is her story? The answer forms the remaining plot.

Analysis:

Firstly, Sangeetha and Tiruveer deliver fine performances in seemingly complex roles. The film is elevated by strong performances from the lead and the supporting cast.

The real standout is the technical finesse though. The background score is riveting and it gels with the theme of the film. The dark visuals offer a spooky experience which is essential for a film of this genre.

The director Karthik picks a genuine horror subject and narrates it mostly in a familiar tone. The film follows the regular tropes of a standard Telugu horror film. But the issue is the unnecessarily lengthy run time. A good 30 minutes could’ve been chopped off from the final cut to make the film more interesting.

The interval and post interval blocks are good. The opening exchanges pertaining to the establishment of the horror track and handled and presented well. The ending needed a better approach as it comes out lengthy and undercooked.

Verdict: Masooda is a decent horror thriller that has enough scary elements but at the same time, is also tiringly lengthy. The film caters to those who truly love horror thrillers.
